Slate tiles require more than just standard thinset mortar. To install correctly, you must use a wet-mortar made from cement and sand. It is important to get the right consistency. If it is too wet, the slate will not adhere correctly. If it is too dry, it may not set properly. That is why it is important to have an experienced mason help you when installing. Instead of wasting your time and money, our

team can help get the job done right and in a timely manner.
It is also important to dry fit the slate. Planning how the slate will lay without mortar will allow you to arrange it exactly the way you want it before it is mortared down. It will also allow you the opportunity to sort out the tiles as slate can vary in color, texture, and thickness. In most cases, slate can be used on either side, so if you do not like the color on one side, you can flip it to the other side.
By planning the design of the slate, you will need to pick the pieces up one at a time to lay the mortar. This will allow you to adjust the amount of mortar placed behind each piece. If a piece is a little thinner, add more mortar to bring it up a little. For grout lines, use the same mortar used to install them.
If you are going to tackle this project by yourself, be sure to plan. We always recommend having an experienced masonry team help you install slate, just to be on the safe side. This could also save you a lot of time as well as money. In most cases, you may not have the special tools needed and instead of going out and getting them to use once, you can rely on our team!
